BOOK I

(Psalms 1-41)

The Two Ways

 1 How happy is the man
    who does not follow ^[a] the advice of the wicked,
    or take ^[b] the path of sinners,
    or join a group ^[c] of mockers! ^(A)

    2 Instead, his delight is in the LORD's instruction,
    and he meditates on it day and night. ^(B)

    3 He is like a tree planted beside streams of water ^[d]
    that bears its fruit in season ^{(C) [e]}
    and whose leaf does not wither. ^(D)
    Whatever he does prospers. ^(E)

    4 The wicked are not like this;
    instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away. ^(F)

    5 Therefore the wicked will not survive ^[f] the judgment, ^(G)
    and sinners will not be in the community of the righteous.

    6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, ^(H)
    but the way of the wicked leads to ruin. ^(I)

Psalm 2

Coronation of the Son

 1 Why ^(J) do the nations rebel ^{(K) [g]}
    and the peoples plot in vain? ^(L)

    2 The kings of the earth take their stand ^(M)
    and the rulers conspire together
    against the LORD and His Anointed One: ^{(N) [h]}

    3 "Let us tear off their chains
    and free ourselves from their restraints." ^{(O) [i]}

    4 The One enthroned ^[j] in heaven laughs;
    the Lord ridicules them. ^(P)

    5 Then He speaks to them in His anger
    and terrifies them in His wrath: ^(Q)

    6 "I have consecrated My King ^[k]
    on Zion, My holy mountain." ^(R)

    7 I will declare the LORD's decree:
    He said to Me, "You are My Son; ^[l]
    today I have become Your ^[m] Father. ^(S)

    8 Ask of Me,
    and I will make the nations Your ^[n] inheritance
    and the ends of the earth Your ^[o] possession. ^(T)

    9 You will break ^[p] them with a rod of iron;
    You ^[q] will shatter them like pottery." ^{(U) [r]}

    10 So now, kings, be wise;
    receive instruction, you judges of the earth.

    11 Serve the LORD with reverential awe,
    and rejoice with trembling. ^(V)

    12 Pay homage to ^[s] the Son, or He ^[t] will be angry,
    and you will perish in your rebellion, ^{(W) [u]}
    for His ^[v] anger may ignite at any moment. ^(X)
    All those who take refuge in Him ^[w] are happy. ^(Y)

Psalm 3

Confidence in Troubled Times

 1 LORD, how my foes increase!
    There are many who attack me. ^(Z)

    2 Many say about me,
    "There is no help for him in God." ^(AA)

          Selah

    3 But You, LORD, are a shield around me, ^(AB)
    my glory, ^(AC) and the One who lifts up my head. ^(AD)

    4 I cry aloud to the LORD,
    and He answers me from His holy mountain. ^(AE)

         Selah

    5 I lie down and sleep;
    I wake again because the LORD sustains me. ^(AF)

    6 I am not afraid of the thousands of people
    who have taken their stand against me on every side. ^(AG)

    7 Rise up, LORD! ^(AH)
    Save me, my God!
    You strike all my enemies on the cheek; ^(AI)
    You break the teeth of the wicked. ^(AJ)

    8 Salvation belongs to the LORD; ^(AK)
    may Your blessing be on Your people. ^(AL)

Psalm 4

A Night Prayer

For the choir director: with stringed instruments. ^(AM) A Davidic psalm.

 1 Answer me when I call,
    God, who vindicates me. ^{(AN) [x]}
    You freed me from affliction; ^(AO)
    be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

    2 How long, exalted men, will my honor be insulted? ^(AP)
    [How long] will you love what is worthless ^(AQ)
    and pursue a lie?

    3 Know that the LORD has set apart
    the faithful for Himself;
    the LORD will hear when I call to Him.

    4 Be angry ^[y] and do not sin; ^(AR)
    on your bed, reflect in your heart and be still. ^(AS)

    5 Offer sacrifices in righteousness ^{(AT) [z]}
    and trust in the LORD. ^(AU)

    6 Many are saying, "Who can show us anything good?"
    Look on us with favor, LORD. ^(AV)

    7 You have put more joy in my heart
    than they have when their grain and new wine abound. ^(AW)

    8 I will both lie down and sleep in peace, ^(AX)
    for You alone, LORD, make me live in safety. ^(AY)

Psalm 5

The Refuge of the Righteous

For the choir director: with the flutes. A Davidic psalm.

 1 Listen to my words, LORD;
    consider my sighing. ^(AZ)

    2 Pay attention to the sound of my cry, ^(BA)
    my King and my God, ^(BB)
    for I pray to You.

    3 At daybreak, ^(BC) LORD, You hear my voice;
    at daybreak I plead my case to You ^(BD) and watch expectantly.

    4 For You are not a God who delights in wickedness;
    evil cannot lodge with You. ^(BE)

    5 The boastful cannot stand in Your presence; ^(BF)
    You hate all evildoers. ^(BG)

    6 You destroy those who tell lies; ^(BH)
    the LORD abhors a man of bloodshed and treachery. ^(BI)

    7 But I enter Your house
    by the abundance of Your faithful love; ^(BJ)
    I bow down toward Your holy temple
    in reverential awe of You. ^(BK)

    8 LORD, lead me in Your righteousness, ^(BL)
    because of my adversaries; ^[aa]
    make Your way straight before me. ^(BM)

    9 For there is nothing reliable in what they say; ^{(BN) [ab]}
    destruction is within them;
    their throat is an open grave;
    they flatter with their tongues. ^(BO)

    10 Punish them, God;
    let them fall by their own schemes. ^(BP)
    Drive them out ^(BQ) because of their many crimes,
    for they rebel against You. ^(BR)

    11 But let all who take refuge in You rejoice; ^(BS)
    let them shout for joy forever.
    May You shelter them, ^(BT)
    and may those who love Your name boast about You. ^(BU)

    12 For You, LORD, bless the righteous one;
    You surround him with favor like a shield. ^(BV)

Psalm 23

The Good Shepherd

A Davidic psalm.

 1 The LORD is my shepherd; ^(A)
    there is nothing I lack. ^(B)

    2 He lets me lie down in green pastures; ^(C)
    He leads me beside quiet waters. ^(D)

    3 He renews my life;
    He leads me along the right paths ^[a]
    for His name's sake. ^(E)

    4 Even when I go through the darkest valley, ^[b]
    I fear [no] danger,
    for You are with me; ^(F)
    Your rod and Your staff ^[c] —they comfort me. ^(G)

    5 You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;

    6 Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me
    all the days of my life, ^(J)
    and I will dwell in ^[d] the house of the LORD

Psalm 24

The King of Glory

A Davidic psalm.

 1 The earth and everything in it,
    the world and its inhabitants,
    belong to the LORD; ^(L)

    2 for He laid its foundation on the seas
    and established it on the rivers. ^(M)

    3 Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD?
    Who may stand in His holy place? ^(N)

    4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, ^(O)
    who has not set his mind ^[f] on what is false, ^(P)
    and who has not sworn deceitfully.

    5 He will receive blessing from the LORD, ^(Q)
    and righteousness from the God of his salvation. ^(R)

    6 Such is the generation of those who seek Him,
    who seek the face of the God of Jacob. ^{(S) [g]}

    7 Lift up your heads, you gates!
    Rise up, ancient doors!

Dependence on the LORD

    2 My God, I trust in You.

    3 Not one person who waits for You
    will be disgraced; ^(Z)
    those who act treacherously without cause

    4 Make Your ways known to me, LORD;
    teach me Your paths. ^(AB)

    5 Guide me in Your truth and teach me, ^(AC)
    for You are the God of my salvation; ^(AD)

Prayer for Vindication

Davidic.

 1 Vindicate me, LORD,
    because I have lived with integrity
    and have trusted in the LORD without wavering. ^(BF)

    2 Test me, LORD, and try me;
    examine my heart and mind. ^(BG)

    3 For Your faithful love is before my eyes,
    and I live by Your truth. ^(BH)

    4 I do not sit with the worthless
    or associate with hypocrites.

    5 I hate a crowd of evildoers,
    and I do not sit with the wicked. ^(BI)

    6 I wash my hands ^[m] in innocence ^(BJ)
    and go around Your altar, LORD, ^(BK)

    7 raising my voice in thanksgiving ^(BL)
    and telling about Your wonderful works. ^(BM)

    8 LORD, I love the house where You dwell,
    the place where Your glory resides. ^(BN)

    9 Do not destroy me along with sinners,
    or my life along with men of bloodshed ^(BO)

    10 in whose hands are evil schemes,
    and whose right hands are filled with bribes. ^(BP)

    11 But I live with integrity;
    redeem me and be gracious to me. ^(BQ)

    12 My foot stands on level ground; ^(BR)
    I will praise the LORD in the assemblies. ^(BS)

Psalm 27

My Stronghold

Davidic.

 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation—
    whom should I fear? ^(BT)
    The LORD is the stronghold of my life—
    of whom should I be afraid? ^(BU)

    2 When evildoers came against me to devour my flesh, ^(BV)
    my foes and my enemies stumbled and fell. ^(BW)

    3 Though an army deploy against me,
    my heart is not afraid;
    though war break out against me,
    still I am confident. ^(BX)

    4 I have asked one thing from the LORD;
    it is what I desire:
    to dwell in the house of the LORD
    all the days of my life, ^(BY)
    gazing on the beauty of the LORD ^(BZ)
    and seeking [Him] in His temple. ^(CA)

    5 For He will conceal me in His shelter
    in the day of adversity;
    He will hide me under the cover of His tent;
    He will set me high on a rock. ^(CB)

    6 Then my head will be high
    above my enemies around me; ^(CC)
    I will offer sacrifices in His tent with shouts of joy. ^(CD)
    I will sing and make music to the LORD. ^(CE)

    7 LORD, hear my voice when I call;
    be gracious to me and answer me. ^(CF)

    8 In Your behalf my heart says, "Seek My face."
    LORD, I will seek Your face. ^(CG)

    9 Do not hide Your face from me; ^(CH)
    do not turn Your servant away in anger. ^(CI)
    You have been my help; ^(CJ)
    do not leave me or abandon me,
    God of my salvation.

    10 Even if my father and mother abandon me,
    the LORD cares for me. ^(CK)

    11 Because of my adversaries,
    show me Your way, LORD,
    and lead me on a level path. ^(CL)

    12 Do not give me over to the will of my foes,
    for false witnesses rise up against me,
    breathing violence. ^(CM)

    13 I am certain that I will see the LORD's goodness
    in the land of the living. ^(CN)

    14 Wait for the LORD;
    be courageous and let your heart be strong. ^(CO)
